SINGAPORE POLYTECHNIC - SCHOOL OF DESIGN

The School of Design (SD) which is located in the campus of Singapore Polytechnic (SP) is a building which was recently completed. As part of the SP Masterplan, there will be an Addition and Alternation (A&A) project in the pipeline for the next Five-Year Plan. Landscape design proposals are needed for consideration and included in the Five-Year Plan. SD needs conducive landscape spaces to encourage students to be outdoors for gathering, out-of-classroom learning, outdoor gallery, studying and other activities.
The areas in SD Block that calls for landscape design interventions are:
- Raised Plaza facing Prince Edward Drive surrounded by 4 trees that are conserved and includes the grand staircase, drop-off and green buffer.
- Terraced Garden situated at the Ground Floor of SD Block facing T3A, it is a transitional space between the two blocks.
- E-Deck (Environmental Deck) situated on the third floor of SD Block.
- Roof Garden situated on the roof of SD Block.

Out of the four areas, Raised Plaza was selected as the focus area for the Integrated Project 1 for Year 2.
With a design objective which is to design a garden which is serene and comfortable for visitors to relax and interact with one another, spaces which are suitable for social interaction and bonding among visitors were introduced. Not only that, elements ,especially the water features, which were introduced in these spaces produce sounds of nature which exudes a calm feeling towards visitors. Bearing in mind to integrate the proposed designs together with the school's architecture, which is simple and modernised; simple yet appealing designs were implemented.
